How do I learn to sing in a speech position?

Often, vocalists who learn to sing on their own do not use their vocal muscles correctly. Because of this, they have all sorts of clamps, sore throats, and tension in the muscles that should not participate in singing. This video presents exercises that will help you learn the capabilities of your voice, identify a comfortable sound zone, and allow you to be in a speech position while singing.

Exercise ” Emotions»
Try to say any word, for example, “Hello”, with different emotional content: joy, sadness, anger, determination, surprise, and so on. At the same time, pay attention to what sensations you experience in the body: muscle tone, sensations in the throat, as well as intonation movements.

Exercise ” Of Course»
To perform this exercise, try to pronounce the word of course as relaxed as possible, as if you have just got out of bed and your voice has not yet woken up. This word will sound with a certain huskiness in singing it is called strobes or vocal creak. Make sure that you stand up straight, your shoulders, back, and chest are relaxed. There should be no unpleasant sensations in your throat. First, do the exercise without the piano, and then add an accompaniment.

The next step of the exercise is to say the word “of Course” in the middle register of your voice. The word should sound like you are actively agreeing with someone. Note that your overall tone should be higher than in the previous part of the exercise.

To complete this exercise, repeat the word of course in high case. At this stage, you push your emotion to the limit, as if you are trying to convince your interlocutor. You will notice that your diaphragm and abdominal muscles are active, while your jaw should be relaxed and your tongue should be soft.

Exercise ” Spiral»
Imagine that you are drawing a spiral with three turns with your voice. The main emotion when performing this exercise should be surprise. Find the lowest note in your range and start “drawing a spiral” with your voice to the “m” sound, deliberately stretching your exhalation. Make sure your body is relaxed and your tongue is soft. Each turn in the spiral is an increase in emotionality.
