Music is good for the heart
Listening to your favorite music is good for the health of the heart and blood vessels, scientists from the University of Maryland have found, having previously proved that laughter also benefits the cardiovascular system. In a study presented at a meeting of the American heart Association in New Orleans, scientists have shown for the first time that emotions caused by cheerful music have a healing effect on blood vessels.
“We have previously shown that positive emotions, laughter, have a positive effect on vascular health. This logically led to the question whether other emotions, in particular those caused by music, can have a similar effect, ” says lead author of the study, Dr. Michael Miller, whose words are quoted in the University’s report.
“We knew that different people can react differently to different types of music, so in this study, we allowed participants to select music based on their preferences,” he said, adding that most participants attributed country songs to such music.
The experiment, which involved 10 people, consisted of four phases. During the first test, the subjects listened to the music that they said caused them joyful emotions. In the second stage, they listened to music that caused a sense of anxiety. In the third stage, participants were given music for relaxation, and in the fourth stage they watched comic videos. The order of the four phases for each participant was chosen at random. before starting each stage of the experiment, they studied the state of blood vessels, in particular, their reaction to a sharp increase in blood flow.
The researchers set out to find out how the endothelium – the layer of cells lining the inner surface of blood vessels-reacts to emotions. It is the endothelium that plays an important role in regulating blood flow, clotting, and blood density. the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases largely depends on its condition. The results showed that the subjects who listened to fun music, blood vessels expanded by 26%, anxiety – only 6%, watching comic videos-19%, and listening to relaxing music-11%.
The authors of the study believe that physiological responses to different types of music are associated with a positive or negative reaction of blood vessels.
