Precepts of a novice drummer

So, do you want to play as Steven Adler from Guns N ‘ Roses or Vinny Appisi from Black Sabbath? Well, that’s a great goal! But be prepared to be patient. The process of learning the drums is a long way, and it may even seem too difficult for some. To pass it as quickly as possible and achieve the desired result in the end, it is most effective to rely on the experience of those who followed this path before you.

We have collected tips for novice drummers that will help you avoid the most common mistakes and keep you motivated until the end.

Don’t rush!

High-speed fractions and deuces on bass drums look and sound impressive, but beginners should start with simpler elements. Otherwise, you will decide that playing the drum kit is too difficult, and your motivation will evaporate. During your first lessons, pay attention to the following points.

Metre. If you don’t learn how to play smoothly and clearly, no effective techniques will help you become a good drummer. Any music group will prefer a drummer with a perfect sense of rhythm to a drummer who can play at least 40 amazing drawings.

The basics. In music, you most often hear simple fractions and drawings on the drums. Why? Yes, because they always work well! Take a responsible approach to learning the basics, so that you have the most confident support for further improvement of the technique.

Don’t get carried away with plates. Yes, the cymbals sound loud and cool, and they also bring variety to your parties. However, if you can only play a few simple drawings so far, you should avoid using cymbals in your games. First, learn how to play the drums well, then you will not be difficult to add cymbal beats to your performance.

Play softly. You may like it when the drummers literally break their sticks into splinters in the climactic moments. But playing hard with as yet poor technique will not only damage your equipment, but also cause pain in your hands. Apply exactly as much force as necessary to achieve the correct dynamics. When you get used to playing softly, you will notice that your stamina and speed have increased, and your punches have become more accurate.

Invest in the right equipment

Almost everyone who wants to learn to play the drums dreams of a cool set. But not everyone is ready to put such a whopper at home. Do not rush to buy equipment and invest your money consciously. Your main investment at this stage is training.

Training pad. The pad can serve both novice and experienced drummers. The device costs about two thousand rubles and allows you to study at home without disturbing the peace of your neighbors. In addition, you can always take the pad with you. So this is an ideal option for students and those who often go on business trips.

Set for beginners. Usually a beginner’s set consists of 4 or 5 parts: a working drum, a “barrel”, and two or three volumes. Sometimes basic sets for can include a hi-hat.

Drumstick. What is the point of drums if there is nothing to hit them with? To choose the right pair, you should ask your drum teacher at Jam’s cool for advice. It is also wise to have a spare set of sticks, in case one breaks.

Metronome. If you have problems with rhythm, it is better to have a metronome at home. You can set this device to your desired tempo and play fractions and at the desired speed, focusing on keeping the meter level.

Practice consciously

Quality is more important than quantity. Of course, the time spent behind the drum kit has a positive effect on your progress. But still, when studying at home, focus on the quality, not the number of classes. Simply many times thoughtlessly playing exercises and drawings you will not achieve a good technique.

Bring it to the end. Hone your drawings, rudiments, and exercises to perfection. Even if you think that you are ready to go further, do not give up what you are doing at the moment until the teacher gives you the appropriate task.

Be prepared to waste time. If you study as an adult, your time is divided between work, family, and social life. But if you started making music, you will also have to learn time management. Start with at least 20 minutes of practice, but play every day. Over time, this will develop into a habit, and it will become easier for you to find time for longer classes.

Choose a systematic approach. You can learn to play drums on your own using books and video tutorials, or with a teacher. But music school is the only option in which you will get high-quality systematic knowledge, as well as practice in the ensemble, so necessary for a drummer.
